1. Outer Layer: Prevention & Deterrence
Goal: Stop intruders before they get inside.
Doors: Solid core or steel doors with reinforced frames, deadbolts, and strike plates.
Windows: Pin locks, security film, or shatter-resistant laminate.
Lighting: Motion-activated exterior lights, especially around entrances.
Cameras & signs: Visible security cameras or even fake camera housings; alarm system signage.
Landscaping: Trim bushes/trees near windows to remove hiding spots.
Dogs: Barking dogs, even small ones, are an excellent early warning system.
2. Middle Layer: Inside Barriers
Goal: Slow intruder down, give you time to respond.
Interior locks: Reinforce bedroom or hallway doors with sturdy locks.
Doorstops / security bars: Quick-deploy wedges or bars for doors.
Noise deterrents: Loud alarms or sirens that can be triggered remotely.
3. Inner Layer: Defensive Tools (Non-Lethal)
Goal: Defend yourself if confronted.
Pepper spray or gel: Effective at close range; gel is better indoors.
Tasers/stun guns: Provide incapacitation but require you to be within reach (unless using probe-style).
Impact tools: Heavy-duty flashlight, baton, or even a sturdy stick/bat — doubles as illumination and defense.
Personal alarm: 120–130 dB devices can shock/disorient an intruder and alert neighbors.
4. Core Layer: Safe Retreat
Goal: Keep yourself and family safe until help arrives.
Safe room (or fortified bedroom): Solid door, lock, and phone charger inside.
Emergency communication: Keep a charged cell phone or landline accessible.
Plan ahead: Teach family members where to go and how to call for help.
5. Aftermath
Call police immediately once you’re secure.
Don’t chase intruders — the goal is safety, not confrontation.
Have a family plan: Everyone knows where to go and what to do.

The most effective approach is layering: prevention + barriers + non-lethal defense + retreat. That way you’re not relying on just one tool (like pepper spray) if things escalate.
